Lockheed Martin Canada Celebrates Transfer of Final Frigate in the HALIFAX Class Modernization Project

HALIFAX, NS November 29, 2016 – Lockheed Martin Canada joined the Government of Canada, the Royal Canadian Navy, Seaspan, and Irving Shipbuilding in celebrating the successful completion and transfer of HMCS Toronto – the twelfth and final frigate of the HALIFAX Class Modernization project to complete its modernization - to the Department of National Defence Dockyard.

Today’s event marks a significant milestone in the program, and one that turns the page on the final chapter of this complex and collaborative effort between the government, navy and more than thirty companies within the Canadian shipbuilding industry.

“Our Lockheed Martin Canada team is proud of our longstanding support to the Royal Canadian Navy for more than three decades on the most successful naval projects in Canada’s history - from the Canadian Patrol Frigate project of the mid-80s to the Halifax Class Modernization project of today,” said Rosemary Chapdelaine, Vice President and General Manager, Lockheed Martin Canada Rotary and Mission Systems. “We have many employees who have been with us for over 20 and 30 years – some approaching 40 years – who can tell fascinating stories about their involvement with the original Halifax class systems and technologies, and how interesting it is that their career has led to developing new innovative systems for today’s program and future pursuits.”

The company’s core strategy also included strong Canadian partnerships and suppliers, producing a combat management system and combat system integration capability built in Canada by Canadians. Chapdelaine continued, “Our guiding vision is to continue to strengthen the Canadian economy and deliver trusted solutions for Canada’s unique needs. Lockheed Martin Canada focuses on combining the strengths and capabilities of our partners and suppliers to jointly create competitive offerings for domestic and global markets.”

CMS 330 is proving itself everyday on the modernized Halifax-class frigates and is the backbone of the solution for New Zealand’s ANZAC Frigate Systems Upgrade as well as Canada’s new fleet of Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships. Thanks to the expertise of its Canadian engineers and technologists, Lockheed Martin Canada was the only Canadian company to pre-qualify as a combat systems integrator for the Canadian Surface Combatant program.

Lockheed Martin Canada wishes to extend enthusiastic congratulations to the HALIFAX Class Modernization team for delivering the twelfth and final frigate of this program - HMCS Toronto - back into the hands of the Royal Canadian Navy.
